Policy, Progress, and Prior Authorization: Highlights from Alaska’s State of Reform
“Our vision is one where prior authorization becomes as invisible as possible and is done before you leave the doctor’s office. That’s how it should work.”
That was the message from Gary Strannigan, Premera’s VP of congressional & legislative affairs, during last week’s State of Reform conference in Anchorage. Gary joined other healthcare leaders to discuss how health plans, states, and regulators can collaborate to improve the prior authorization process—making it faster, more transparent, and less disruptive for patients and providers.
This vision also matters for employers. Prior authorization delays can cause distractions in both employee productivity and care. Streamlining the process means fewer care interruptions and a better experience for your workforce.
The conference also spotlighted opportunities like the Rural Health Transformation Program, which aims to strengthen care delivery in underserved areas. However, there are challenges on the horizon, like the potential expiration of enhanced premium tax credits, which currently help thousands of Alaskan families afford coverage.
State of Reform continues to be a dynamic forum for policy and innovation. We appreciate everyone who contributed their insights on today’s challenges and tomorrow’s solutions.
