Removing prior authorization from massage therapy streamlines member experience

Beginning January 1, 2027, prior authorization will no longer be required for massage therapy visits. We’re simplifying the review process by removing prior authorization requirements for massage therapy, allowing services to process directly to plan benefits.

Why it matters

Prior authorization takes time and requires administrative support. By removing prior authorization for massage therapy, we can reduce:

• Administrative burden
• Member and provider inquiries
• Claims rework by overlapping procedure codes

With this change, members will gain faster access to care, and providers can expect to gain reduced administrative burden. Members and providers alike will have a more streamlined experience when providing massage therapy care.

This change only impacts massage therapy services. As with all benefit changes, we’ll continue to monitor utilization and ensure services are being used appropriately. Massage therapy services will continue to be governed by plan benefits, visit limits, and contracted reimbursement rates.
